Who do you ask to join your group?

Participants

Olami programs are primarily designed for Jewish people aged 18-35 years old. The group is for anyone 18-35 who is interested in Jewish meditation, mindfulness and prayer and wants to learn it through a Jewish lens. Olami programs are often for those who have not grown up in a religious or observant household, nor those who went to an orthodox Jewish day school. The reason for this is that the needs are too different and it has not been helpful to join them together. 

Olami Educator

Please make sure there is an Olami educator in your group. This is essential and if you aren’t sure we can help match one. The role of the educator is to deepen the conversation, answer Torah based questions, bring added value with regards to the topics and follow up with participants.

How to lead an Olami Connect group

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS

Find approximately 10-15 appropriate Jewish friends and send them this flyer and this promo video to invite them. (It is okay if you get more or less participants in your group.) Olami programs are designed primarily for people who do not have a strong Jewish education/background.

ASK THEM TO JOIN

Ask them to sign up at olami.org/connect and it will unlock their special Olami Connect Meditation Journal. This is a PDF they can download and fill out as they go (or print).

CREATE A WHATSAPP GROUP AND JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP

Start a WhatsApp group with this profile picture and join the Olami Connect Facebook group. PLEASE DON'T ADD ANY PARTICIPANTS TO YOUR WHATSAPP GROUP UNTIL YOU'VE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION THAT THEY ARE REGISTERED.

JOIN THE FACILITATORS WHATSAPP CHAT

Join the facilitators only WhatsApp chat so you have a community of facilitators to discuss the Challenge with, ask questions, or post highlights. Jackie Glaser will be moderating.

GET NOTIFICATIONS

Olami will send you emails confirming which participants have registered for your group and then you can add those participants to your group.

ADD PARTICIPANTS AND EDUCATOR TO YOUR WHATSAPP GROUP

Once you have received an email that a participant has signed up, then you can add the participant to your WhatsApp group. You can also add your educator to your WhatsApp group. If you are waiting for us to assign you an educator, we will be in touch shortly.

Session 0

Hi everyone! My name is ____and I am facilitating an Olami Connect 7 Day Challenge to strengthen connection through Jewish Meditation, mindfulness and prayer. This meditation challenge is 7 days and today is day 0.  The creation of the group and intentions.

Guidelines to make this experience the most impactful for you:

  1. Our commitment is about 15-20 minutes per day which includes a guided meditation, mindfulness exercises or an action challenge. We hope to have some great discussions and conversations around the ideas both here and in the global Olami Connect FB group.

 

  1. No pressure at all – if you would like to leave the group, you may do so at any time and I don’t take it personally at all. If you miss more than a day, it is probably better to drop out and restart when you can again another time.

 

  1. After the posting of the meditation video, you have about 24 hours to complete it. After completing the meditation please text Day 1- Done, Day 2- done etc.

 

  1. People learn best from each other and process with more clarity when we articulate our experiences. I will be asking questions so that we can discuss our insights, observations and comments together. Please give some feedback that you are comfortable so we can all grow.

 

  1. Each day at least one person from each group will be asked to share a comment in the global FB group so a broader conversation can occur in the community.  

 

  1. Each group ideally should meet once together live and know there are optional one on one coaching sessions with your Olami educator (on the chat) as well as with Jackie on FB LIVE

 

  1. There is no quick fix. These are little bytes of wisdom and ideas that lead us to a happier life – it will all depend on the effort we invest over a lifetime to ensure the happiest life we can possibly have. Looking forward to sharing the journey with you ????

Note to Facilitator : Today is just for getting groups finalized, making sure your group is also on FB and shares a comment or two. Would be great to introduce yourselves on your WhatsApp group and what you hope to get out of the initiative as well as on FB. 

Discussion Questions : 

What’s your intention for the challenge? What would you like to get out of it?

What are some group norms /guidelines that are important? Examples could be keep your commitment, no question is a bad question, confidentiality, share something.

 

There are nearly 500 people in the FB group. Also make sure your group is registered here olami.org/connect and that they know to text Day 0 – done when they watched the video as they will do this daily for a sense of accountability.

 

Please post early morning your time so people can fit it in conveniently in their day. You could also do it together, live with some or all of you if people choose.

Also if you could set the tone for sharing in the FB group that would be awesome so that we can have a broader conversation— only if you want and feel comfortable. Many people told me after they loved seeing everyone’s shares and it made them feel so much better , clearer about their experiences. You can share or encourage a participant to share if they said something powerful, interesting in your smaller group. Or have a question that would be helpful to ask in the big group.

 

Session 2 – Gratitude

If your participants aren’t responding by now, it’s time to check in

You could say “Hi ! Just wanted to check in. I see you haven’t been so active in the group and am wondering if it’s going ok or if you’re too busy to do the program or some other reason?”

Explain to them “ the reason we ask for the day 1 done etc is that it creates a supportive and powerful group dynamic when everyone is focused as well as provides a sense of personal accountability. So we ask that everyone commit to create a supportive environment — would you be open to doing that ? “

Session 3 – Inner Peace

Inner peace ironically comes with the ability to be present with whatever we are doing. Being able to aim our consciousness to a single point focus. In Judaism we call it kavanna – our intention from kivun which means ‘to aim’. It’s a muscle. Let’s practice.

Session 4 – Love as Oneness

We all want to feel more love. Love is the source of the deepest joy.

Love is one of the most esoteric, supernatural experiences and has roots in deep kabbalah. When I see others as just like me, it removes the barrier. My center expands, love fills and there is no distinction between me and them. There is Oneness “Echad”

Session 5 – Brotherhood

Ach means brother. Expanding on this Oneness idea from yesterday, the closer we feel ie family the more joy it brings. A constant connection, an eternal bond that is there no matter what. It’s unconditional. This is family. All of the Jewish people are our family.

Session 6 – Judgement

This is one of the least known ones! We actually get rina( joy) from din which means accurate judgement. Din refers to the limits and rules in our world that put things in their proper place. 

Din is the path of justice, precision or exactitude.

Session 7 – Thrillseeking

Today we are talking about Chedva – Thrill seeking. We all know and love this one. The adrenaline junkies want chedva! On a spiritual level how does this apply to us? Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. All growth happens on this edge–let’s see how and why.

SHABBAT

SHABBAT IS NOT INCLUDED AS ONE OF THE 7 DAYS BUT IS AN OPTIONAL EXTRA.

 

OPTIONAL SHABBAT MEDITATION – Tranquility (use the Shabbat entry as appropriate to what day it falls in your Challenge)

 

The deepest joy is just to be present and at peace with what we are experiencing. It’s the experience of the result of our productivity during the week. Try on Shabbat to focus on breath or a mantra like shalom . And when the mind wanders – then gently bring back your attention. Time it for 10 mins and allow extra time at the end to talk to your Higher Power/God from this deeper place for another 5 mins. This is called Hisbodedus — free flowing, unstructured meditation. As you continue to talk you get in touch with a deeper place in you.
